This biennial event is one worth waiting for! If you are looking to learn about getting involved in farming or if you are already a farmer and want to diversify or learn more about your field, then this is the event for you! Inspirational speakers, hands-on breakout sessions, access to funding sources and grant programs, along with an unparelled networking opportunity is only the beginning. Each participant receives a handbook loaded with contacts, programs for women farmers, and a resource to where to find information you need to succeed. Join us for this one day conference. Vegetable Varieties & the AllAmerica Selections
During winter, gardeners can look leisurely through seed catalogs to plan for spring planting. Hidden between all those pretty pictures and thoughts of warm weather is a host of information to help decide what to grow. Selecting what to grow depends on a variety of items, such as flavor, available space, nutritional value or how well the crop resists disease. This class will help decipher catalog lingo and growing charts. We will also discuss the All-America Selections vegetable variety trials and tips on becoming an expert on variety evaluation.

Coastal Certificate- Sound Gardening: Clean Water
The Coastal Certificate program is offered to those who wish to familiarize themselves with current environmental issues unique to our coastal waters and Long Island Sound, while learning about ways to landscape more sustainably. In a time when climate change is taking on increasing significance, the Coastal Certificate Program will address how and why the transition to sustainable landscapes is not just a good idea, but a global environmental imperative. The Coastal Certificate is designed to generate ambassadors of alternatives to nutrient and chemically intensive landscaping practices for Connecticut coastal and watershed residents. The outreach component is geared specifically to spreading the word about sustainable landscaping through projects, educational materials, and other creative ideas. In addition to covering coastal environmental issues, the Coastal Certificate program will feature speakers that address exciting ways to reduce or rethink lawns, create plant habitats that attract birds and pollinating insects, design for sustainability using native plants, and share tools and resources for effective outreach. The field trip will relate to class topics and be local to the workshop location. Participants must attend all classes and complete 10 hours of approved outreach activities to receive the Coastal Certificate. Reading resources will be provided. Those enrolled will receive sic (6) AMG credits upon completion. The thought of becoming a Bee Keeper and extracting honey is romantic and attractive to many. Some dream of having enough honey for personal use, others think of Bee Keeping as a business. The likelihood of success is low if you are not fully informed on what it takes to be a thriving Bee Keeper prior to starting. Have you ever wondered about Bee Keeping? Do you know the steps in the direction of becoming a successful Bee Keeper? Are you conversant about the cost; education needs; time/hive management; the pitfalls; and overall commitment necessary for success? The Plain Truth About Bee Keeping Parts 1 and 2 will answer these questions and offer all necessary information on how to start the process of Bee Keeping. The courses will also delineate for you if Bee Keeping is meant for you. This class will offer pertinent information other Bee Keeping classes do not offer. Your questions will be answered! You may take one or both classes, as you wish. The class will be held at the bee yard at Chunnie Towne Farm in East Haddam. Participants will be on site for hive opening and observation of all aspects of hive management

Welding for Farmers
Spend a weekend learning the basics of mild steel fabrication, equipment repair and project building specific for farmers and farm needs. This two-day workshop will introduce students to MIG welding, stick-welding, the oxygen-acetylene torch, various metal saws, cold and hot bending, and using the grinder. By the end of the first day you will be able to heat, cut, join, bend, and polish. On the second day you will have the full day to use your new skills creating a project to take home or to the farm. For practical hands-on experience, students are encouraged to bring pictures of specific issues they’d like to address, or bring components in that need to be welded or repaired. No previous experience necessary—this is a great opportunity to explore welding for the first time. Materials and tools will be provided.
